The Newest Fuel Cell Vehicle Debuts in Los Angeles 2006

August 4th, 2009 | by admin |

December 2006 (Medialink) — Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCV’s) are slated to be all the rage for the future and may revolutionize on-road transportation in the next few years. This new emerging technology has the potential to significantly reduce energy use and harmful emissions, as well as our dependence on foreign oil.

The first Fuel Cell Vehicle with a radius of 250 miles — the largest distance to date — is debuting at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show for the first time, supporting that FCV’s are sustainable as a viable technology. Fueled with pure hydrogen gas onboard in high-pressure tanks, they can also be fueled with hydrogen-rich fuels; such as methanol, natural gas, or even gasoline. Previously, FCV’s only worked efficiently in warm weather, but this latest technology starts easily even at temperatures as low as minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit, making it accessible for everyone anywhere.

    the hydrogen …
the hydrogen pressure vessels are the same as the CNG compressed natural gas. They take about 5000-10,000 psi. These tanks are crash tested to 70 mph. Each tank has a pressure relief valve that prevents the tank from exploding.

With the safety valve disabled the tank explodes in 4 1/2 minutes. Big Bang. Gasoline makes a pool fire under the car immediately. Therefore, hydrogen buys you about 4 minutes in time to escape from a car fire.
