Are you allowed to pass an army vehicle on the highway?

March 19th, 2010 | by admin |

I’m a Canadian that frequently travels on a highway that is used by a local American Army Base. A couple of times now, I’ve been caught behind a slow moving (approx. 50mph) convoy of army vehicles. Am I allowed to pass them?

Yeah…sure….. once on the open highway or any road an army vehicle (considering you are talking about a U.S. military vehicle) is subject to the same rules and proceedures as that of any vehicle on the road. Convoy’s travel slow for many reasons but the main is that the vehicle was never designed to do 65 mph smoothly on the open road

Yes you can unless their overhead siren lights are on.

As long as you’re obeying the rules of the road, yes.

Yes, you may. Any vehicles with federal plates, including postal service vehicles, have priority on the road, even over an ambulance, but you need only give them the right of way. You may pass them if they don’t mind.

However, anyone driving a federal vehicle has a federal driver’s license and could lose their jobs if they abused the right to driving priority, so most don’t.

Not a problem, I’ve been in convoys like that many times.

Just remember to do it safely, because trucks don’t exactly stop on a dime, and a few of those drivers may be new at it.

Yes. the only time you are forbidden from passing or cutting in is if it were a combat patrol. Since there are no combat patrols or tactical movements on US soil (Its against the constitution), not only can you pass military convoys, you can also cut in. Its more respectful just to pass them though. If for whatever reason they are escorting sensitive materials or such, they will have signs on the rear vehicle warning you to stay back.

American convoys in the U.S.? They have to follow their unit’s speed limit, not the local posted one. Sure, you can pass them. As long as there’s no police escort with them. You can even duck between the vehicles if you need to temporarily, though it’s better to get out from among once you can do so safely.

Are you up near Ft Drum by any chance? I was stationed there for four years. Frikkin’ COLD.
