Innovate or Die – Aquaduct: Mobile Filtration Vehicle
September 11th, 2009 | by admin |
The Aquaduct is pedal powered vehicle that transports, filters, and stores water for the developing world. A peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank draws water from a large tank, through a filter, to a smaller clean tank. The clean tank is removable and closed for contamination-free home storage and use. A clutch engages and disengages the drive belt from the pedal crank, enabling the rider to filter the water while traveling or while stationary.
The Aquaduct is the winning entry in the Innovate or Die contest put on by Google and Specialized. The contest challenge was to build a pedal powered machine that has environmental impact. Please visit our blog ( http://theaquaduct.blogspot.com/ ) or email team.aquaduct@gmail.com for more details.

Great idea and …
Great idea and great work constructing it.
Btw, what kind of filters does it use? Does the filters need to be replaced from time to time due to particles from water? Does it potabilize water or just clean suspension particles?

So stupid. Btw no mention of how long you need to go to clean a few liters of water. I wonder why… Why do we put money in such stupid projects instead of putting it in some viable projects that aim to bring clean water to villages and populations that do not have access to it??

replacement filters …
replacement filters, bacterial contamination of the closed receptacle, and required repairs of the mechanical unit, including replacement inner-tubes make it simply unattainable in its current state.
But we know that these sorts of innovations actually are initial steps toward a (sometimes distantly) related final product.
Good idea. 5/5

This is much too …
This is much too expensive for the third world. Being single purpose make it worse. If the design allowed for transport of goods well (so they can make a living of it) one could consider it feasible, but it still needs to become much cheaper and simpler.
