Considered to be the closest thing yet to the ultimate eco-car, the TOYOTA FCHV was developed using Toyota’s original hybrid technology—derived from the Prius, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle—as its core technology.

As R&D on the TOYOTA FCHV continues, the technology that drives it is accelerating toward widespread use. At the same time, we are exploring the potential of a wide range of power sources—including not only hydrogen, but also gasoline, diesel, electricity and alternative fuels—while considering what the optimum eco-car would be for the energy situation, infrastructure and regulations in each country.

As global warming concerns and emission standards threaten vehicle production in the United States, General Motors is exhaustively researching alternative-fuel technologies, including Hydrogen Fuel Cells. A fuel cell creates electricity to power an electric motor via an electrochemical reaction, utilizing Hydrogen (created from water through electrolysis). GM has chosen to showcase its Hydrogen Fuel Cell system in its crossover SUV, the Chevrolet Equinox — bucking the anti-SUV trend by creating a vehicle that can carry the entire family and its cargo all while emitting nothing but water from the tailpipe. Currently Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell Vehicles are only available through the Project Driveway Program — a user trial designed to collect as much information as possible from drivers and onboard data collectors. GM hopes to use this data to one day incorporate Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology into other vehicles. Check out the video below to learn all about the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell Vehicle with kbb’s Video Production Editor Beth Lear-VanderYacht.

That was the question at this year’s North American International Auto Show as nearly every automaker announced an alternative propulsion vehicle. Ranging from bio-fuel to fuel cell, it is clear that hybrids are still the most energy efficient technologies available today.

Many “next generation” gas-electric hybrids were unveiled. While dual-mode hybrids are efficient at stop and go traffic, they don’t quite add as much on the highways. A new concept plug-in hybrid from Saturn can potentially go for 10 miles on pure electric power, before needing to use gas.

But whether its battery technology, plugging into the grid, powering vehicles from solar, nuclear, or wind, all renewable fuels come into play. Automakers say that having a diverse set of alternatives is the best way to reduce our dependence on gasoline.

Welcome to Solar Electrical Vehicles. Founded in mid 2005, SEV was created to develop a true solar charging system for Hybrid Electric Vehicles that provides increased electric driving range and improved fuel economy.

Founded by Greg Johanson, with over 20 years of experience in the solar electric vehicle industry, SEV is the sister company to the oldest and largest systems integrator of solar power systems in Southern California, Solar Electrical Systems.

The Solar Electric Vehicle system was designed and engineered as an easy to install (2 to 3 hours) integrated accessory system with a custom molded low profile solar module, supplemental battery pack and a proven charge controlling system.
The SEV system generates energy from sunlight and converts this energy to high voltage which is utilized to charge the supplemental battery and the Hybrid Vehicle (HV) battery pack. This allows the Hybrid Vehicle to operate for extended driving range in the electric mode

With the SEV solar system, the Toyota Prius can operate up to 20 miles per day in electric mode thus improving fuel economy by up to 29% (depending on driving habits and conditions).
