So what does an auto show look like in the midst of one of the worst markets in history? Not so bad, actually. The 2009 New York Auto Show is looking like it will finish the season strong, with a handful of notable world debuts along with a dozen or so North American firsts.

Think SUVs are dead? Well, not quite. Acura, GMC and Land Rover have all come up with what they think are the next generation of SUVs. Smaller, more nimble and less painful at the pump, all-new vehicles from all three manufacturers will be making their world debuts in New York.

If you’re still not buying into the efficient, high-performance SUV thing, then look for the new 2010 Subaru Legacy. It’ll be shown for the first time in New York and is likely to have all the utility you’ll ever need. And for those who couldn’t care less about utility, Nissan will display the convertible version of its new 370Z coupe. Coverage starts April 8 with video, blogs and photos from the show floor.

The car quickly catches on fire. The drunk guy pounds the car with pieces of metal. He climbs back into the car honks the horn and it blows out in a firey puff. The drunk guy begins pushing his fire engulfed car backwards while yelling and swearing. A second guy grabs him from the inferno minutes before an explosion takes place. The FDNY begin dousing the flames and a second explosion is heard. The NYPD arrive and the drunk guy starts running from the scene. The police quickly stop him, handcuff him and throw him in their van.

Some have asked why we didn’t “run down and save him” ourselves.

Main reasons…

1. There is a barbed wire fence between us and the private property the drunk guy broke into. It would not be possible to interfere.

2. It’s dangerous!!! if the drunk guy is strong enough to push a flaming car he could easily overpower us. He could also have a weapon or be on a death wish. There is no way to gauge his mental state at this point.

3. There is SECOND PERSON out there with him and we couldn’t determine if he was friend or foe.

A big thanx goes out to all of NYC emergency teams for their quick response time on this! Thank you the NYPD, FDNY and Emergency Medical Teams!

Five of the six SUVs earn the top rating of good in the Institute’s 40 mph frontal offset test. The Chevrolet TrailBlazer is the only one to earn an acceptable rating for frontal crash protection. Based on overall results of front, side, and rear tests, the TrailBlazer is the lowest rated current model midsize SUV.

Performance varied considerably in the side test that replicates a 31 mph crash in which the striking vehicle is another SUV or pickup. Two Nissan SUVs, the Pathfinder and Xterra, are rated good for protection in side impacts, but only when they’re equipped with optional side airbags. Without the option, these SUVs earn marginal ratings. The Toyota 4Runner equipped with standard side airbags is rated good, the Ford Explorer with standard side airbags earns an acceptable rating, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chevrolet TrailBlazer, both with standard side airbags, are marginal.
