Purchasing extended service contracts (warranties) on used vehicles?
November 9th, 2009 | by admin |I just bought a used vehicle and was looking into extended service contracts/warranties. Anyone know of a company that offers reasonabe pricing arragements without all the exceptions and are reliable on claims?
I bought an extended warranty contract on a ‘99 Durango w/towing package a few years back. Made sure contract specified "gaskets and seals" as well as 4wd and drivetrain. Truck had 66,000 miles on it. 9mths later I towed a trailer that was well within the towing specs of the vehicle 1400 miles round trip and trans started acting up. Took it to dealer and under service contract they replaced trans as it had a hairline crack, replaced trans cooler and lines, gave me a new rental car for 4 days while work was performed and also replaced intake manifold gasket as it was leaking and all I was charged was the $75 deductible. I paid $1,375 for the 2yr extended warranty, and the bill for repairs, parts and labor and rental car was $1,986…yes extended warranties work IF one knows exactly what warranty to ask for and what they want specifically covered. Keep in mind that cost of extended warranty dramatically goes up when vehicle has over 100,000 on the clock. Its amazing how much gaskets and seals cost if you don’t have them covered.

I never bought extended warranties as they are a rip off, won’t pay half the time due to fine print in the contract and they are very expensive to buy.

They are a ripoff, steer clear of them.

They’re a bad deal. Every one I know of who’s bought bumper-to-bumper warranties, new or used, lived to regret it. No matter what the contract stated, it never worked out that it was covered. It’s just a rip-off money-maker for the seller. Save your money, invest it in a good portfolio, and pull it out to repair your car when it breaks. Simple as that.

I have purchased extended warranties on a couple of used vehicles, never got a penny’s worth of value from them. I don’t know if they were any good or not, I just never needed to use them. I doubt I’d ever buy another one.
