I’m kind of a car nut and I have two sons I just bought cars for. They had their preferences and I gave them each 5 grand. the rest they had to save up. I inspected each of their choices. One got a ‘96 Mustang convertible and the other a ‘98 BMW M3. They both had over 100K miles but were taken care of. So far both cars have proven money well spent. If he’s not picky, I’d go for a old American boat (slang for a big car). Find one that was driven little by elderly folks. They’re out there. Get them checked out by a reputable dealer or service shop. They usually have some program on what to check, but understand it’s still a crap shoot. After the mechanic gives it a "thumbs up" and you drive it off into the sunset, nothing says the motor won’t just seize up an hour later. Those cars will be easy and cheaper to fix and the insurance will be cheaper too. The large size will keep your kid safer. The best money spent is to get your kid into a teen driving course. Not cheap but can be the difference on staying alive.

The Local Car Dealer, sometimes they hold great deals. Like a place around here they have cars for 9,000.00 under resale right now. But you might want to see what he wants. Does he want a Sedan (4 door), Coupe (2 door), SUV, or Van. Then go from their. Even check with family members or something or even the Auto Trade Magazine.

Used cars can be purchased by going to the local dealer, looking at the classified ads, looking at car auctions or checking out the various websites that allow a person to search and buy a car online. But the best place to find cheap used cars is car auctions. You can shop right from the comfort of your own home and you usually can buy a near new car with the lowest price.
There are three kinds of car auctions:
Dealer only auctions — only licensed dealers are allowed to buy or sell cars,You can not get in or bid without being a licensed car dealer or an employee.
Public auctions — the public is allowed in.In fact, you usually cant by anything from public ‘open’ auctions because usually the pricing is too high.
Government and Police auctions — Every day, the government confiscates, seizes and repossesses thousands of Vehicles. These vehicles are usually typically listed at 90% OFF their original value and auctions usually start at $100.
Four months ago,I bouht a near new SUV from online government auction. It only cost me $730 and i have not had one problem with it yet .
You can check out http://seized-car-auction.info ,That site lists top 5 Police auction sites and help you choose the best one.
Good luck!
